  • We are so very pleased to announce that the 2009 City of Newberry,  Employee of the year is Johnnie Mae Garrison. Johnnie Mae represents all that is good and kind in our community. Her sweet demeanor and professional behavior are a credit to herself and the entire staff.
To be selected "Employee of the Year" in a year of fiscal challenges and increased workload, and with the impact of staff reductions and increased cost is remarkable.

Newberry is known for its stable growth and a fiscally responsible government. It holds the distinction of being one of the few debt-free municipalities in the state of Florida, and for levying the lowest tax rates in Alachua County. Newberry also lays claim to ownership of its own fire department, water plant, wastewater plant and sanitation department - with savings passed on to residents. It is one of the few remaining cities that purchases electric power and then resells it. Over 100 businesses call Newberry home and the population is growing.
